Jesse: Hey, Richie Happy Friday!
Richard: Happy Friday! How鈥檚 it聽going?
Jesse: It鈥檚 good, it鈥檚 a聽podcast day. The rain has finally stopped.
Richard: I聽know it鈥檚 so聽funny when we鈥檙e doing the聽show and聽talking about it聽with Steve and聽Mary the聽other days. It聽seems so聽tragically. 聯It鈥檚 raining! Oh聽my聽God!聰 The rest the聽country is聽like 聯You only have rain?聰.
Jesse: Yeah, you get to聽complain about droughts all the聽time. Now it聽rains.
Richard: Just the聽rain you want, and聽it鈥檚 not good enough now either.
Jesse: Yeah, but the聽sun is聽back, it鈥檚 podcast day.
Richard: I鈥檓 in. Let鈥檚 do聽this.
Jesse: Yeah, let鈥檚 do聽it.
Richard: It鈥檚 been fun, have you been listening to聽a聽lot of聽podcasts lately outside of聽this one interview?
Jesse: I聽do. I鈥檓 kind of聽a聽podcast junkie. I聽listen to聽a聽lot of聽marketing related ones, a聽couple on聽politics and聽current events. So聽the聽radio is聽not making it, I鈥檓 not here for聽the聽radio anymore.
Richard: I聽don鈥檛 either. It鈥檚 amazing. I聽love it. It鈥檚 just so聽easy to聽do聽multitasking learning. Where you鈥檙e doing the聽honey do鈥檚 and聽all the聽other stuff by聽your headphones around listening to聽your favorite marketing or聽whatever it聽is聽you listen to. What are the聽things you do? Kind of聽keeping up聽with the聽learning stuff.
Jesse: Oh, boy. I聽read a聽lot as聽well, so聽there鈥檚 a聽lot of聽newsletters and聽blogs that I聽look at. Pods are easy for聽me聽because I聽can do聽that when I鈥檓 driving and聽I聽have a聽pretty big commute. So聽for聽me聽driving time is聽learning time and聽then when I聽get into work I聽do聽my聽homework. But then I聽read a聽little bit at聽work too.
Richard: Yeah, it鈥檚 what we聽wanted to聽talk about today anyway. We聽realize there鈥檚 so聽much to聽do聽as聽an聽entrepreneur but there鈥檚 always something new to聽learn, and聽all these new technologies that people didn鈥檛 have access to聽before they鈥檙e great. But for聽those of聽you who have iPhone, I鈥檓 sure it聽goes the聽same with the聽Android but I聽just haven鈥檛 had an聽iPhone. You see how often those updates are coming on聽your phone, right. New features, new sets, new things to聽do聽and聽to聽keep up聽with all that learning. It聽did take some time. And we聽know you鈥檙e into learning or聽you wouldn鈥檛 be聽listening to聽this podcast.
Jesse: So聽everybody you鈥檙e doing a聽great job listening to聽podcasts, trying to聽improve your skills and聽the聽ability to聽run your business.
Richard: Yeah. And it鈥檚 just you have to聽get outside of聽yourself to聽know. Yes, you know your business like no聽one else knows your business. But there are so聽many changes in聽so聽many things going on, that it鈥檚 important to聽get out. I聽mean do聽you go聽to聽meetups or聽anything like that?
Jesse: To聽a聽few meetups. I聽work in聽digital too, I聽know so聽many even at聽work at聽51视频. We鈥檙e all in聽the聽same game so聽that鈥檚 really helpful, but sometimes you鈥檝e got to聽get beyond that group. As聽an聽entrepreneur, you know in聽my聽office everybody does work in聽some sort of聽digital. But if聽you鈥檙e doing this as聽a聽solopreneur, maybe none of聽your friends understand what the聽heck you鈥檙e talking about when you say 聯That Facebook algorithm really screwed up聽my聽business聰, they鈥檙e like 聯What are you talking about?聰.
Richard: Did you know LinkedIn had a聽pixel too?鈥
Jesse: Yeah.
Richard: 聯What, really?聰 Everyone else is聽like 聯What is聽he聽talking about?聰.
Jesse: Yeah, exactly. And you need to聽have some friends that you can bounce this stuff off of聽and聽say whatever the聽latest tricks on聽YouTube. And if聽your spouse or聽your family doesn鈥檛 know what you鈥檙e talking about that doesn鈥檛 help. You need to聽find some outlet. You need to聽find your tribe, people that you can talk to. So聽meetups are really a聽good way if聽you don鈥檛 have that outlet.
Richard: Yeah, actually. Oh, I聽just thought about it, today I鈥檓 actually meeting up聽with Matt and聽Joe from Evergreen Profits. The podcast that we聽had on聽a聽while back.
Jesse: So聽even though you can listen to聽their podcasts, it鈥檚 way better to聽actually meet people in聽person. I聽think it鈥檚 what you getting at.
Richard: Especially when it鈥檚 Friday afternoon and聽we鈥檙e good. We鈥檙e going to聽put a聽brewery that wants to聽start a聽podcast also.
Jesse: Awesome.
Richard: Yeah. So聽it鈥檒l be聽interesting. We鈥檒l see how that turns out. And we聽want to聽do聽a聽San Diego podcast too. There are all kinds of聽mostly marketing conversation that will be聽going on聽there. But that鈥檚 funny that we鈥檙e talking about this and聽I聽thought 聯Oh yeah, that鈥檚 this afternoon聰.
Jesse: Yeah. So聽you鈥檝e got to聽get out there. You鈥檝e got to聽meet people. And not only do聽you learn from them, but it聽also keeps you motivated. I聽think there鈥檚 learning and聽there鈥檚 also motivation sometimes. Sales are down and聽you鈥檙e like 聯What鈥檚 going on? How come nobody鈥檚 buying this week?聰 And you need people to聽understand that to聽bounce these things off of.
Richard: So聽if聽you鈥檙e an聽entrepreneur and聽you actually had your business going for聽a聽while now, then you know it鈥檚 a聽slightly manic depressive lifestyle. (laughing) It鈥檚 got a聽rollercoaster ride in聽it. Not necessarily depressing but there are times and聽just like you want to聽hear how someone else got through that, how someone else handled that. And it聽can get lonely. I聽mean you鈥檙e a聽solopreneur. Anyone who鈥檚 been sitting there working on聽the聽computer all day and聽they thought the聽office was horrible when they used to聽work at聽an聽office, sometimes you miss that office. Meet at聽the聽coffee shops, going to聽meetups.
Jesse: Sometimes you鈥檙e just like 聯How do聽you do聽that one thing in聽Excel that makes this do聽like that?聰 And you just like banging your head against the聽computer. And then like 聯Man, I聽used to聽sit with somebody, there was an聽Excel expert back in聽the聽day, this would鈥檝e been done hours ago.聰
Richard: You wouldn鈥檛 be聽thinking about it聽anyway. Exactly. Do聽you do聽conferences and聽stuff like that?
Jesse: That鈥檚 kind of聽what we聽want to聽talk about like conferences. If聽you don鈥檛 have that outlet, if聽you don鈥檛 have a聽meetup group and聽you should get that by聽the聽way you can even go聽to聽business in聽SBA meetings or聽there are all sorts of聽stuff. Chamber of聽Commerce and, wherever you live, there鈥檚 going to聽be聽some similar thing. But to聽really take your skills to聽a聽whole another level going to聽conferences is聽really the聽way to聽go聽and聽it鈥檚 conference season here in聽San Diego.
Richard: Yeah. It鈥檚 funny I鈥檓 flying out next Tuesday for聽a聽conference New Media Summit, for聽the聽podcasters and聽that鈥檚 gonna be聽interesting because that鈥檚 a聽fun one too. Not only do聽you learn from the聽people that are in聽your same space doing podcasting but
Jesse: I聽get it. In聽the聽
Richard: We聽don鈥檛 guarantee. (laughing)
Jesse: By聽the聽way. That鈥檚 a聽little extreme.
Richard: But it聽has happened. It鈥檚 not a聽
Jesse: Absolutely.
Richard: And so聽with the聽first one, what鈥檚 the聽one we鈥檙e going to? Oh, Traffic and聽Conversion.
Jesse: Yeah. So聽Traffic and聽Conversion is聽in聽San Diego. That鈥檚 coming up聽soon. By聽the聽time you listen to聽this might have been in聽the聽past. So聽there鈥檚 kind of聽two groups in聽the聽
Richard: Oh聽yeah. That it鈥檚 one of聽my聽favorite ones for聽a聽few reasons. First off, we鈥檝e known each other doing
Jesse: And they鈥檙e all the聽same concepts here. Most likely you鈥檙e going to聽be聽using Facebook, you can be聽using Google and聽then you鈥檇 want to聽play with the聽other new platforms out there, whether it鈥檚 Instagram, or聽Pinterest, or聽YouTube. Actually, that brings me聽to聽the聽other conferences coming up. Social Media Marketing world. So聽that鈥檚 also in聽San Diego and聽about a聽couple of聽weeks later. But it鈥檚 actually very similar but it鈥檚 a聽little bit more focused on聽social media as聽you might guess from the聽name. But there鈥檚 a聽lot of聽the聽same speakers. So, Rich, when you go聽these companies what鈥檚 a聽couple the聽topics or聽tactics you鈥檙e looking at聽this year in聽specifically?
Richard: Let鈥檚 see. I鈥檒l take that in聽three separate pieces. I鈥檒l say first, what do聽I聽most like to聽do聽when I聽go聽to聽a聽conference. And that usually connects deeper with the聽people that I聽already have a聽connection with, that it鈥檚 mostly been online but then taken that connection offline. That鈥檚 my聽ultimate goal at聽these conferences because you used to聽choose your tribe based on聽location and聽where you lived and聽now your tribe could literally be聽on聽the聽opposite side of聽the聽world or聽right next door or聽three thousand miles away, whatever. Pick a聽number. But at聽these conferences, it鈥檚 really a聽great chance to聽deepen that connection. So聽that鈥檚 my聽first goal. Usually, then it聽goes into that. The second one that we聽were talking about earlier. Our first thing was learning, I聽want to聽learn from those people because I鈥檝e been in聽this long enough. They鈥檙e either at聽my聽speed or聽above me聽and聽so聽I聽like to聽try to聽always have something new that I聽think I聽can add to聽their repertoire and聽vice versa. There鈥檚 usually something I聽can get out of聽there. So聽I聽definitely want to聽learn but I聽really try to聽time out because of聽the聽wanting to聽touch so聽many of聽them and聽actually connect with them outside in聽real life. I聽try to聽schedule, I聽really go聽through when鈥檚 each of聽them speaking, what鈥檚 going on. I聽try to聽because I聽know I鈥檓 not the聽only one. Especially at聽the聽Social Media Marketing World, where there鈥檚 almost like groupies that follow some of聽these people around. It鈥檚 interesting how you can even approach that. Usually, I聽will reach out to聽them ahead of聽time and聽try to聽set up聽a聽meeting like 聯Hey, what are you gonna do聽after you break out?聰 Something like that or聽聯Do you want to聽go聽to聽this party?聰
Jesse: I聽think that鈥檚 a聽good idea. Yeah, I聽know what you mean, there鈥檚 a聽lot of聽people. Well, Richard, you think we聽have groupies that follow our podcast yet? And I聽don鈥檛 think so.
Richard: But my聽daughter knows we聽do.
Jesse: All right. (laughing) All right. Okay. So聽we聽got one and聽we聽got one we鈥檙e working on聽it. But yeah, when you go聽to聽some of聽the聽bigger named conferences that have more podcasters or聽influencers, digital marketers.
Richard: The bloggers.
Jesse: Yeah, they鈥檙e out there and聽you see the聽line that forms after they speak is聽like 30聽deep and聽you鈥檙e like okay. I聽don鈥檛 know if聽I聽want to聽be聽number 31聽because I鈥檓 going to聽get like a聽
Richard: Yeah. And it鈥檚 it鈥檚 really cool. There鈥檚 something you were saying that I聽think mixed also with what I聽was saying. I聽also like new people even though I聽like to聽up聽level learning. That鈥檚 what learning is聽all about. I聽sometimes learn just as聽much from a聽newbie but it鈥檚 not necessarily that they know more than me聽in聽that subject as聽much as聽they haven鈥檛 been living and聽breathing that subject. So聽sometimes they ask a聽better question. And so聽the聽thing that we鈥檝e been doing the聽same way because we鈥檝e been doing it聽the聽same way. It聽is聽like wow. If聽you鈥檙e not real quick to聽snuff the聽question because they鈥檙e just getting started but you really hear it. You can get some gems because they鈥檙e asking something. Think of聽all the聽things that are winning right now it鈥檚 the聽things that are making things frictionless. Uber and聽Netflix and聽all this. My聽daughter literally says to聽me聽the聽other day: 聯I聽love watching this stuff on聽Amazon you don鈥檛 even have to聽change your channel, it聽just rolls over聰. Oh, great. So聽but you have an聽opportunity to聽see things differently and聽the聽reason why I聽brought up聽that one was Blockbuster was approached by聽Netflix. 聯Hey, would you like to聽require this type of聽thing?聰 Not only do聽you not want to聽get out of聽here. We聽think people like this idea of聽series serendipitously bumping into neighbors while looking at聽the聽back of聽it. So聽it鈥檚 like someone asked the聽question differently. And then Netflix was developed. And Amazon, shouldn鈥檛 Sears have been Amazon? Sometimes you need that beginner mind to聽make you look at聽something different and聽then you can go聽talk to聽all those other people and聽figure out the聽answer for聽sure. But it鈥檚 just a聽
Jesse: For sure. Yeah, I聽think whether it鈥檚 a聽conference or聽even more of聽a聽meetup there鈥檚 definitely people that know more than you. I鈥檓 probably looking more for聽the聽expert level knowledge than the聽newbies, like talking to聽everybody. I鈥檓 not as聽much of聽a聽talker as聽you. There will be聽people that I鈥檝e heard them on聽a聽podcast before and聽I鈥檒l have to聽go聽to聽their session because I聽either I聽know who they are
Richard: I聽think you just nailed it聽right there. If聽in聽sales let鈥檚 go聽back to聽that we鈥檝e heard it聽over and聽over again five to聽ten touch points. What does that really mean? It聽means, I鈥檓 not going to聽make this be聽hard stats, but it聽means it聽takes five times until you probably become aware of聽something. You see new things constantly and聽then around six or聽seven you kind of聽like 聯Oh, that鈥檚 interesting聰, an聽eight, nine, or聽ten, you either buy or聽don鈥檛 buy. But to聽your point, you need to聽see it聽over and聽over and聽over again. Think about how many different ways. So聽five to聽ten touch points 51视频. You can go聽to聽these places and聽a聽lot of聽these conferences you yourself can learn something. You can do聽biz dev with other vendors products that can help 51视频. So聽you鈥檙e going to聽go聽to聽these things and聽hopefully, you might find two or聽three new people that want to聽connect to聽the聽App Store and聽new business. I鈥檓 not saying you close that deal right then but it鈥檚 a聽touchpoint.
Jesse: Actually I聽think that鈥檚 a聽good read. We聽didn鈥檛 really touch on聽that but a聽lot of聽times go聽into conferences too. Don鈥檛 ignore the聽vendors, the聽vendor booths. Of聽course, they鈥檙e trying to聽sell you something and聽they want to聽come to聽talk to聽you and聽maybe they have some freebies and聽giveaways but you can learn a聽lot by聽talking to聽the聽vendors as聽well like all different things you hadn鈥檛 even thought of聽yet.
Richard: I聽mean you can sit there and聽Google your way to聽try to聽find out an聽answer. You can go聽to聽a聽conference and聽there are five different shipping things and聽now you can figure out which shipping you really should be聽using right to聽the聽source.
Jesse: Absolutely.
Richard: Googling, looking through dots, trying to聽figure out which one is聽going to聽work.
Jesse: And a聽lot of聽times when you go聽to聽the聽conferences too you realize that it鈥檚 not just the聽newbies work in聽the聽booths, sometimes it鈥檚 the聽top dogs are working the聽booths. You like it聽now. I鈥檝e worked boots before at聽conferences as聽both a聽peon and聽more experienced person. Sometimes I聽didn鈥檛 know the聽answer but鈥
Richard: It聽depends on聽how long that trip has been. Have you been on聽the聽road for聽three months? Probably the聽newbie. If聽this is聽a聽major conference there probably鈥
Jesse: A聽lot of聽times you get the聽big dogs there. Not only are you getting information, but you also get it聽from the聽right person that you would never get this person on聽email. I聽guess that鈥檚 a聽good point there. If聽it鈥檚 the聽VP聽of聽sales or聽whatever that鈥檚 work in聽the聽booth that person not necessarily on聽the聽customer support line. So聽very important to聽go聽talk to聽the聽vendors and聽learn from them, learn from everybody, network. It聽comes as聽very important and聽the聽reason we鈥檙e telling you this in聽a聽podcast is聽we鈥檙e excited about going to聽these conferences and聽then learning very specific things that we聽can bring in聽in聽the聽future. So聽I鈥檒l give you a聽couple of聽examples. We鈥檝e talked a聽lot about Instagram lately so聽going to聽be聽anything that鈥檚 Instagram related. I鈥檓 gonna be聽going into those, taking a聽bunch of聽notes. Some of聽it聽might be聽a聽way to聽advance to聽take notes on聽it聽and聽put it聽into a聽podcast but I鈥檓 going to聽try to聽pull in聽a聽couple of聽nuggets of聽information that we聽can use. Rich, what are you, need specific topics are you just looking overall?
Richard: Mostly back to聽my聽first two points, connections with people. You obviously know do聽this podcast as聽we聽do聽together but also
Jesse: Cool, I鈥檒l hang out with you then. Then you can be聽the聽connector and聽then I鈥檒l be聽the聽one furiously taking notes and聽learning tactics. It聽could be聽a聽good thing.
Richard: Sounds good. Team up聽one of聽the聽parties.
Jesse: Yeah, we聽also go聽to聽the聽parties. That鈥檚 always fun too. That鈥檚 how you really meet people. I鈥檓 also thinking, it鈥檚 chatbot season for聽me聽so聽I鈥檓 going to聽be聽super excited about chatbots, and聽I鈥檝e listened to聽a聽ton of聽podcasts, I鈥檝e applied it聽a聽little bit here and聽there but I聽think I聽just need to聽dive in聽headfirst. So聽I鈥檓 probably gonna hit up聽four or聽five different sessions specifically about chatbots and聽marketing with chatbots not just more from 聯How do聽you acquire traffic聰. Build a聽funnel with chatbot so聽that鈥檚 something I鈥檓 super excited about it. I聽won鈥檛 be聽sharing like 5聽hours of聽information on聽the聽podcast but I聽do聽want to聽deliver what I聽can and聽from some of聽the聽experts. Try to聽break it聽down into a聽Jesse and聽Rich style.
Richard: Yeah, that would be聽something that would be聽great. Great combo between the聽both of聽us聽too because I鈥檓 also gonna be聽focusing a聽lot on聽not just the聽podcast but just streaming in聽general. Live streaming, audio, video because to聽your point you need traffic. And if聽someone knew exactly the聽movie to聽make. They would just make that movie. But Hollywood doesn鈥檛 know the聽exact movie to聽make. So聽you make 20聽movies and聽you just hope you built the聽model that one of聽those is聽a聽hit it聽pays for聽the聽next 40聽movies. Going there and聽learning how to聽do聽your own content creation is聽going to聽be聽good for聽these people. The 51视频 podcast too because whatever it聽is聽you know there鈥檚 some sort of聽content you need to聽create. If聽you鈥檙e getting people to聽go聽to聽a聽chatbot you鈥檙e gonna be聽giving them some content of聽some kind.
Jesse: It聽just got to聽be聽shorter.
Richard: Yeah. Exactly. You write a聽blog it鈥檚 to聽get people to聽come to聽your website and聽or聽improve your SEO. So聽it鈥檚 all the聽same game.
Jesse: Kind of聽what do聽you like to聽do聽too. Like you, if聽you can do聽the聽Instagram 15聽second stories, if聽you can pick up聽a聽phone. I鈥檓 doing this in聽front of聽myself and聽put your thumb on聽the聽record button and聽deliver like an聽awesome
Richard: Of聽course. Let鈥檚 see, if聽one of聽the聽things that I聽would really love is聽to聽learn what may be聽some of聽you want us聽to聽learn are to聽find out at聽these conferences. So聽if聽you go聽to聽the聽51视频.com/blog/podcast and聽scroll down to聽any聽of聽the聽individual podcasts, you can actually write a聽question there and聽or聽tell us聽why you should be聽on聽this show. Also because we鈥檇 love more merchants on聽the聽show too. We聽love to聽give you feedback and聽help you with your businesses as聽well. We鈥檙e all here for聽learning and聽growth in聽our businesses.
Jesse: Yeah, absolutely. If聽there鈥檚 something you specifically want to聽learn, we鈥檙e going to聽some pretty expensive conferences that you don鈥檛 have to聽pay for. So聽if聽you have a聽very specific question, let us聽know in聽the聽podcast on聽the聽bottom of聽the聽podcast page and聽then yeah what Richard鈥檚 saying is聽for聽sure. We聽want to聽talk to聽some more merchants. There鈥檚 a聽little button on聽the聽bottom that you can just tell us聽your story. Give us聽why you think he鈥檇 be聽a聽great podcast guest. We聽can review your site give you some live advice and聽tips. So聽a聽lot of聽reasons there to聽help drive your business.
Richard: In聽speaking of聽reading and聽reviewing, we聽can always use it. We聽love feedback. We聽love to聽learn. We聽want to聽know what you like, what you don鈥檛 like, what we聽can do聽more, or聽what we聽can do聽less of. Definitely please also read and聽review that good podcast.
Jesse: Rate review, get out there. Make it聽happen.
