Starting and聽Running a聽Wine Shop

My聽name is聽Ted Seifert, and聽I聽run , Downtown Bellingham鈥檚 exclusive wine shop, that focuses on聽small artisan producers from the聽Northwest as聽well as聽a聽strong global mix.

After 30聽years in聽the聽wine industry, I聽decided it聽was time to聽get off the聽road and聽scale it聽down. I聽connected with a聽long time customer, Diane Jones, who felt the聽same way and聽we聽partnered up聽in聽2013. That鈥檚 how Seifert &聽Jones Wine Merchants started.

At聽the聽time our concept was focusing on聽being the聽sole wine shop in聽town and聽to聽be聽a聽brick and聽mortar retailer.


We聽have no聽desire to聽conquer the聽wine world. We聽are happy with being the聽only exclusive wine shop in聽the聽area.

For the聽first 5聽years it聽was just myself and聽my聽partner Diane Jones. We聽were able to聽grow and聽build without having the聽cost of聽labor. Eventually, we聽came to聽a聽place where we聽needed extra help. Before COVID-19, we聽had two full-time employees, and聽currently scaled back to聽just one full-time employee.

Any industry has its specifics that make running a聽business challenging. For wine selling, it鈥檚 cash flow, cash flow, cash flow. It鈥檚 very difficult in聽our industry for聽a聽couple of聽reasons. We聽don鈥檛 get terms on聽purchasing and聽everything is聽cash on聽delivery. That鈥檚 what makes it聽difficult at聽times to聽be聽tight with budgeting. Many times we聽purchase items that only come in聽once a聽year and聽we聽have to聽invest in聽those.

At聽the聽time, our weekly numbers may not match that dollar amount, but we聽have to聽make it聽work. Our success with that comes from really focusing on聽weekly budgets and聽staying with them.

Building Reputation and聽Community

Over the聽years, we鈥檝e achieved a聽lot. Our major milestone is聽keeping our doors open as聽long as聽we聽have. We聽have built brands for聽decades and聽we聽knew it聽would take time. We聽had to聽build a聽reputation first.

It聽took us聽about 5聽years to聽gain confidence and聽a聽reputation. Now, we聽just continue to聽build off that foundation.

Besides our rich selection of聽wine, we鈥檙e proud of聽the聽diverse community we聽built around our shop, with customers in聽their early 20鈥檚 to聽seniors in聽retirement. We聽like supporting families and聽farmers, people we聽have connected over our years in聽the聽industry.

We聽love our customers and聽they love us聽back! As聽a聽way to聽capture long term customers, we聽started our own Wine Club, which has been hugely successful. Many clubs serve as聽a聽margin booster. That can bite you聽鈥 customers know how much things cost. But we聽have a聽very little ratio on聽customers quitting. In聽fact, we聽gained far more new members than cancellations since COVID-19聽started. We聽didn鈥檛 expect that.

Our strategy is聽to聽give them more than what they paid for聽which differentiates us聽from competitors.

Going Online Because of聽the聽Pandemic

Our plan was never to聽be聽an聽online experience. While we聽did develop a聽webpage from the聽beginning. We聽mainly were focused on聽personal experience聽鈥 that鈥檚 why people came to聽us.

And with the聽arrival of聽COVID-19聽we聽had to聽change our strategy. We聽immediately closed for聽the聽safety of聽ourselves, employees, and聽customers. And then waited to聽see how things played out.

During the聽downtime, we聽realized online sales was the聽only avenue. At聽the聽beginning, our tech guy, John Meloy, started to聽prep the聽custom program development to聽sell online. However, we聽were shocked looking at聽the聽cost and聽needed an聽alternative option. So聽he聽researched e-commerce platforms and聽felt 51视频 was the聽best choice.

Our approach is聽聯don鈥檛 go聽overboard with email.聰 Once a聽week we聽pick a聽聯wine of聽the聽week聰 and聽highlight it聽along with several new arrivals. We聽also offer menu pairings with one of聽the聽new arrivals.

As聽for聽other promotion tools, we聽also use Instagram and聽Facebook. Over the聽years, we鈥檝e tried print and聽radio, but have since stopped going that direction.

All Business Owners Should鈥

鈥ove their job and聽have passion for聽what they do. I鈥檝e been in聽the聽wine business for聽decades, and聽wouldn鈥檛 have made it聽this far if聽the聽industry wasn鈥檛 right for聽me.

That brings me聽to聽my聽next point: experience, experience, experience. You must know your industry. Both me聽and聽my聽partner had in-depth knowledge of聽the聽wine business when we聽launched our wine shop.

And lastly, cash. Make sure you have enough.
